ในวันที่ ๒๗ - ๒๙ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๕๑ ณ ห้องกมลทิพย์บอลรูม โรงแรมสยามซิตี เพื่อระดมทุนหารายได้เข้าศูนย์สิริกิติ์บรมราชินีนาถ โรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ สภากาชาดไทย

เนื่องในโอกาสมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ๗๖ พรรษาในปี ๒๕๕๑ โรงแรมสยามซิตี ร่วมกับ ศูนย์สิริกิติ์บรมราชินีนาถ โรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ (ศูนย์มะเร็งเต้านม) ของสภากาชาดไทย และสิงห์ คอร์เปอเรชั่น จำกัด จะจัดงานแสดงคอนเสิร์ตการกุศล Kamala Sukosol’s “Highlights” Charity Concert with the Prachin Songpow Big Band Jazz Orchestra โดยคุณกมลา สุโกศลและครอบครัว ซึ่งปีนี้ได้รับเกียรติให้เป็น “ทูตต้านมะเร็งเต้านม” ของศูนย์สิริกิติ์บรมราชินีนาถ โรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ (ศูนย์มะเร็งเต้านม) เพื่อส่งเสริมความรู้หญิงในชุมชนแออัด ร่วมด้วยนักร้องรับเชิญชื่อดัง จะนำเสนอบทเพลงบิ๊กแบนด์แจ๊ส รวมทั้งเพลงยอดฮิตต่างๆ ที่เป็นอมตะ และนำบทเพลงของนักประพันธ์และนักร้องชื่อดัง รวมทั้งเพลงป๊อปสมัยใหม่ที่ทุกท่านชื่นชอบมาร่วมแสดงในคอนเสิร์ตครั้งนี้ด้วย โดยนักร้องนักแสดงระดับคุณภาพที่เลื่องชื่อ ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นในวันที่ ๒๗ - ๒๙ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๕๑ ณ ห้องกมลทิพย์บอลรูม โรงแรมสยามซิตี

ในช่วงเวลา 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา โรงแรมสยามซิตีและคุณกมลา สุโกศล ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแสดงดนตรีคอนเสิร์ตการกุศลเสมอมา โดยเมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา การแสดงดนตรีคอนเสิร์ตการกุศลสามารถระดมทุนหารายได้เพื่อมอบให้แก่
สภากาชาดไทยสูงถึง ๓.๑ ล้านบาท และสำหรับปีนี้ ทางคณะผู้จัดกำลังดำเนินการหาผู้สนับสนุนร่วมจัดงานแสดงคอนเสิร์ตครั้งยิ่งใหญ่นี้อีกครั้ง เพื่อเป็นกิจกรรมเฉลิมพระเกียรติแด่สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ในวโรกาสทรงเจริญพระชนมพรรษา ๗๖ พรรษาในปีนี้ และเพื่อมอบให้ “ศูนย์สิริกิติ์บรมราชินีนาถ โรงพยาบาลจุฬาลงกรณ์ (ศูนย์มะเร็งเต้านม)” ซึ่งเป็นศูนย์ที่จัดตั้งเนื่องจากพระราชเสาวนีย์ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ โดยมีพระประสงค์ให้เป็นศูนย์ที่ให้บริการรักษาพยาบาลผู้ป่วยโรคมะเร็ง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งมะเร็งเต้านม ให้เข้าถึงการรักษาที่ดีอย่างเสมอเท่าเทียมกัน โดยมี รศ.นพ.กฤษณ์ จาฎามระ เป็นหัวหน้าศูนย์สิริกิติ์บรมราชินีนาถ ให้สำเร็จผลสมดังเจตนารมณ์

คุณกมลา สุโกศล ในฐานะ “ราชินีนักร้องวงบิ๊กแบนด์แจ๊สแห่งประเทศไทย” จึงได้เชิญศิลปินนักร้องรับเชิญที่เคยร่วมแสดงก้าวขึ้นสู่เวทีการแสดงคอนเสิร์ตการกุศลครั้งยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดอีกครั้ง เพื่อขับร้องบทเพลงอันไพเราะหลากหลายแบบ โดยผู้ร่วมแสดงล้วนเป็นผู้ที่มีพรสวรรค์และน้ำเสียงที่ไพเราะหาได้ยากยิ่ง รวมทั้งนักแสดงนักเต้นที่มีลีลางดงาม
ร่วมแสดงกับคณะบิ๊กแบนด์แจ๊สออร์เคสตร้าของคุณปราจีน ทรงเผ่า ซึ่งกอปรด้วยนักดนตรีดัง ๒๐ ท่าน และบทเพลงต่างๆที่ถูกคัดสรรมาขับร้อง ซึ่งล้วนเป็นบทเพลงอมตะที่ไพเราะน่าฟังมีทั้งเพลงยอดนิยมและเพลงป็อปสมัยใหม่

นักร้องจะประกอบด้วยทูตต้านมะเร็งเต้านม อาทิ ครอบครัว คุณกมลา สุโกศล คุณมาริสา สุโกศล หนุนภักดี คุณดารณี สุโกศล แคลปป์ และลูกสาว น้องนาตาเลีย “น้อย วงพรู”(กฤษดา สุโกศล แคลปป์) และหลานๆ รวมทั้งอีกสองสาวทูตมะเร็งเต้านม คุณมิ้นท์ อรรถวดี จิระมณีกุล และ คุณแหวนแหวน ปวริศา เพ็ญชาติ โดยมีนักร้องรับเชิญ คุณดลชัย บุณยะรัตเวช และนักร้องประสานเสียงซึ่งควบคุมโดย คุณธานี พูน-สุวรรณ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีคณะนักแสดงนักเต้นจาก โรงเรียนอารีย์นาฏยศิลป์ ซึ่งกำกับท่าเต้นโดย อาจารย์อารีย์ สหเวชชภัณฑ์ มาร่วมแสดงเพื่อเพิ่มความสนุกสนานตื่นเต้นด้วยการแสดงและท่าเต้นที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจสุดๆ พร้อมรับฟังเพลง “The Greatest Love of All” จากทูตต้านมะเร็งเต้านมร่วมกัน

ซึ่งงานคอนเสิร์ตการกุศลครั้งนี้ จะจัดขึ้นในวันที่ 27 ถึง 29 พฤศจิกายน 2551 ณ ห้องกมลทิพย์บอลรูมของโรงแรมสยามซิตี โดยในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 27 และวันเสาร์ที่ 29 พฤศจิกายน ศกนี้ เป็นรอบปกติ การแสดงเริ่มเวลา 20.00 น. และ ในวันศุกร์ที่ 28 พฤศจิกายน เป็นรอบกาล่าดินเน่อร์ เริ่มเวลา 19.00 น. บัตรรอบกาล่าดินเน่อร์ ราคาโต๊ะละ 40,000 บาท และ 35,000 บาท รอบปกติ บัตรราคา 2,500 / 2,000 / 1,500 / 1,000 บาท สำหรับนักเรียนนักศึกษาราคา 400 บาท โทร. 02-247-0123 ต่อ 1928, 1912 และ 1916-8

The Thai Red Cross Society, the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok and Singha Corporation Co., Ltd., are proud to announce the dates for Kamala Sukosol’s 2008 Charity Concert at the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok. Kamala Sukosol, Thailand’s reigning ‘Queen of Jazz’ takes the stage November 27-29, 2008, for another mesmerizing charity concert.
The theme this year – “Highlights”– presents Khun Kamala Sukosol, together with her family, friends and past collaborators, in a concert that showcases a varied and exciting repertoire. Thailand’s premium vocal talents and performers entertain along with the annual concert’s trademark – the 20-member Prachin Songpow Big Band Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Piti Kayoonpan.
Kamala will be joined on stage by her family, all of whom are the ambassadors of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, including pop sensation, Ardhawadee Jiramaneekul (Mint) and TV presenter and vocalist, Pavarisa Phenjati (Whan Whan). Accompanying Kamala on stage are her talented daughter Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi and her singer/actor son, Krissada Sukosol Clapp (Noi of the band “Pru”) who will sing a new version of the all-time hit, “Live & Learn”, with his mother. Daughter, Daranee Sukosol Clapp, granddaughter, Natalia Briones, and special guest artist Dolchai Boonyaratavej join the hip swinging event.
An amazing vocal back-up team under the direction of Tanee Poonsuwan promises to keep the event hopping. Equally matched with their dazzling presence and exciting choreography are the charming members of Aree School of Dance Arts.
The diminutive Kamala is an inspiration to all. Her inimitable style and vocal prowess matched only with a 20-member Big Band. Together, they challenge the most difficult arrangements with a repertoire that includes Jazz, Pop, Latin and international favourites. “Highlights” is a compilation of Kamala’s classic hits, “Hava Nagila” and “New York, New York”, but there’s always a new twist on traditional arrangements, such as “My Heart Belongs to Mommy”, sung with daughters Marisa and Daranee. Gershwin’s “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” will be a fun duet between Kamala and granddaughter Natalia. The fast-paced New Orleans Jazz is another audience favourite and foot-tapping extravaganza, as are the orchestrated renditions of “McArthur Park” and Hairspray’s “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. While the guys perform a rousing rendition of “YMCA”, the girls take the stage for their own variation of “Dancing Queen” from the recent movie “Mamma Mia!” The fast-paced evening is guaranteed first-rate entertainment, fun, and excitement for all…did we mention Bollywood?!

Ardhawadee Jiramaneekul (Mint)
Mint graduated with an Upper Second from European Business School London (EBSL) with a BA Hons Degree in International Business with French and Spanish in 2005. Previously, she was educated during her high school years at ‘Le Rosey’ in Switzerland for 5 years, after which she went to pursue her A-Levels at Heathfield College in Ascot, England. Having spent 11 years in total for her education in Europe, Mint has not only incorporated cross-cultural perspectives in her way of life, but has also acquired excellent knowledge of 5 languages: Thai, English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Mint is also known as a Pop/Soul Recording Artist currently signed with SonyBMG. She started her singing career in 2001 at the age of 18 and has had 3 solo albums with a few number-one hits and awards (refer to Awards & Achievement section). In 2007, Mint took a break on her music career and joined one of the country’s most reputable public relations and advertising company, Syllable Group. She was titled Account Manager, looking after and being the consultant of flagship accounts such as Bangkok Hospital, Standard Chartered Bank Thailand, GlaxoSmithKline, Sisley cosmetics, Swarovski among others. Since 2008, Mint joined her family’s Versace Business as Vice President and Fashion Buyer, as well as preparing her 4th Album with SonyBMG.

Mint has been involved in music since the age of 3 where she joined a music academy and starting learning the piano. She surrounded herself in a musical environment and found her true passion in all types of music. Not only that she studied Music IGCSE and pursued ‘Music’ as one of her A-Levels, she was proactively involved in music as her extra curriculum activities such as taking part in musicals and plays, switching her role between the piano and the flute in the school orchestra, being the lead singer at her school’s Pop & Rock band, participating in the school Choir as a lead Soprano, and at times, as the Choir conductor. One of her proudest moments was achieving a distinction on her grade 8 (highest level) singing exam by the Associated Board of London. It can be said that Mint has been exposed to a broad spectrum of music, Classical and contemporary as well as fully utilising both her business and artistic abilities.

กฤษดา สุโกศล แคลปป์

กฤษดา สุโกศล แคลปป์ หรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ “น้อย วงพรู” บุตรชายคนเล็กของคุณแม่ กมลา สุโกศล
เขาเป็นที่รู้จักทั้งในฐานะนักร้องนำ “วงพรู” วงดนตรียอดนิยม และในฐานะนักแสดงหนุ่มที่ได้รับบทบาทเด่นจากภาพยนตร์ดังๆ ที่น่าจับตามองอีกคนหนึ่งในวงการบันเทิงทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ

คุณน้อยคว้ารางวัล “สุพรรณหงส์” “รางวัลชมรมวิจารณ์บันเทิง” และรางวัลผลงานบันเทิงยอดเยี่ยม ประจำปี (Star Entertainment Awards 2006)” ประเภทนักแสดงนำฝ่ายชายยอดเยี่ยม เมื่อต้นปี 2550 จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง “13 เกมสยอง” และในปี 2551 นี้ ทุกท่านจะได้ชมบทบาทการแสดงภาพยนตร์จากเขาอีก 2 เรื่อง คือ จากภาพยนตร์ไทยเรื่อง A Moment in June และ ภาพยนตร์ฝรั่งเศสเรื่อง Return To The Bronze Forest อีกด้วย

นอกจากนี้ คุณน้อยยังเตรียมตัวเขียนเพลงเพื่อจะออกอัลบั้มเดี่ยวของตนเองในปีหน้าอีกด้วย และในเวลาเดียวกัน เขายังต้องคิดสร้างสรรค์และดูแลรับผิดชอบโครงการใหม่ของครอบครัว “สุโกศล” ในธุรกิจการโรงแรมอีกหนึ่งโรงแรม ภายใต้ชื่อ “เดอะ สยาม” โรงแรมสไตล์บูติคแห่งใหม่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ซึ่งคาดว่าจะมีกำหนดเปิดประมาณปี 2552

คุณน้อยแต่งงานกับคุณเมลานี สาวลูกครึ่งชาวอังกฤษ-ฮ่องกง และเพิ่งมีพยานรักเป็น “น้องฟิน” อายุได้ 1 ขวบ เขาเป็นคนหนุ่มสมัยใหม่ ผู้รักและหลงใหลในวัตถุโบราณ เขาเป็นนักสะสมของเก่าอันล้ำค่าที่หาตัวจับยากอีกคนหนึ่งด้วย

และคอนเสิร์ตในปีนี้ ผู้ชมคงจะต้องประทับใจกับเขาอีกเช่นเคย กับบทเพลง “Live & Learn” ด้วยสไตล์การร้องแบบ “น้อย”

Krissada Sukosol Clapp

The youngest son of Kamala Sukosol, Noi is a popular singer-actor, recognized for his off-beat movie roles and for fronting the rock band, “Pru.” Earlier this year he won the best actor award at the Supanahong Film Awards, Thailand’s equivalent of The Academy Awards, for his performance in the thriller, “13″. He has two movies opening in 2008, the Thai romantic feature, “A Moment in June”, and a French film, “Return To The Bronze Forest”, in which he plays the villian. Noi is currently writing songs for his solo album due in 2008. In the meantime, he is collaborating with Bill Bensley, one of Asia’s leading architects, on the conceptualization of the Sukosol family’s new boutique property on the river, called, “The Siam,” slated to open in 2009. A passionate antiques collector, he is also opening a gallery and cafe next year in a 90 years old home currenlty under renovation. Noi is married to beautiful Melanie Giles Clapp, and they are proud parents of the latest addition to the
Sukosol family, 1 years old Finnegan!

คุณดารณี สุโกศล แคลปป์

ดารณี สุโกศล แคลปป์ สำเร็จการศึกษาในระดับปริญญาตรีทางด้านเศรษฐศาสตร์จาก Barnard College, Columbia University ด้วยเกียรตินิยม Magna Cum Laude และได้รับเกียรติคัดเลือกให้เป็นสมาชิกสมาคม The Phi Beta Kappa Society ต่อมาได้สำเร็จการศึกษาในระดับปริญญาโททางด้านบริหารและการเงิน จาก J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ทั้งยังมีประสบการณ์ทำงานเป็นนักวาณิชธนกิจที่วอล์ลสตรีท ด้วยประสบการณ์ดังกล่าว ทำให้หลายคนคงจะคิดว่า “ดารณี” เป็นคนเดียวในครอบครัว
“สุโกศล” ที่ไม่ได้ร้องเพลง แต่จริงแล้วเป็นความคิดที่ผิด…..เพราะตั้งแต่สมัยเมื่อเป็นเด็กนักเรียนระดับมัธยมศึกษา เธอเคยร่วมแสดงในละครเพลง “Sweet Charity” และ “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat ” และในระดับปริญญาโท เธอได้แสดงในโชว์วาไรตี้ “The Special “K” Revue” ด้วย

ในปี 2542 คุณดารณีหวนกลับมาขึ้นเวทีอีกครั้ง หลังจากที่ห่างหายไปร่วม 10 ปี และในปี 2551 นี้ คุณดารณี ก็เป็นนักร้องรับเชิญซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในงานคอนเสิร์ตเพื่อการกุศลในครั้งนี้ พร้อมด้วย “นาตาเลีย” บุตรสาวของเธอ ปัจจุบันเธอเป็นรองกรรมการผู้จัดการใหญ่ของบริษัทกมลสุโกศล อีเล็คทริค จำกัด ซึ่งดำเนินกิจการจำหน่ายและบริการเครื่องฉายรังสีเพื่อรักษาโรคมะเร็งให้กับโรงพยาบาล และศูนย์มะเร็งต่างๆในประเทศไทย

Daranee Sukosol Clapp

With her background as an investment banker on Wall Street and her MBA from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, many believe Daranee to be the only “non-singing” member of the Sukosol family. Not true, this Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate has been performing since her high school days where she was one of the lead dancers for the musicals “Sweet Charity” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.

Daranee has been a fixture on Kamala’s stage since 2003, along with her daughter, Natalia Sukosol Briones who has been performing since she was 5 years old.

Although Daranee considers herself an amateur when compared to her mother and siblings, she hopes her performance adds variety and good entertainment for Kamala’s concert.

ดลชัย บุณยะรัตเวช

นักสร้างแบรนด์ระดับแนวหน้าของไทย หลังจากจบสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์บัณฑิต (เกียรตินิยม) จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และปริญญาโทสาขา Advertising Design, Visual and Performing Art ที่ Syracuse University, New York ก็ได้สร้างผลงานที่มีชื่อเสียงตลอด 20 กว่าปีในวงการโฆษณา รวมทั้งการสร้างแบรนด์ Samsung , UBC, Happy D Prompt , ธนชาต, Fitne’ and Cat Telecom

ด้วยใจรักในดนตรีตั้งแต่เด็กโดยเริ่มเรียนเปียโนกับคุณแม่ คุณหญิงมาลัยวัลย์ บุณยะรัตเวช (ศิลปินแห่งชาติ) มีผลงานการประพันธ์เพลงที่หลากหลาย อาทิ ละครเพลง Peter Pan & The Gang, เพลงสำหรับการประกวด Miss Thailand Universe ,เพลงเทิดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และพระบรมราชวงศ์ใน อัลบั้ม “แสงส่องไทย” ของโรงเรียนจิตรลดา, ออกแจ๊สอัลบั้ม “Day Off…Dolchai & friends” เพื่อหาเงินสมทบทุนการกุศล “สมเด็จย่า”

ได้ร่วมแสดงในงานคอนเสิร์ตของ Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, เพลงพระราชนิพนธ์ “แจ๊สในดวงใจ”, “Alive On Broadway” , กมลา สุโกศล Big Band Jazz และ ราตรีศูนย์การแพทย์สิริกิติ์หน้าที่ประทับหลายครั้ง เป็นนักร้องตัวแทนประเทศไทยในงาน Asian Festival of Dance ที่ กรุงมะนิลา และงานสวัสดี Thai night ณ กรุงโตเกียว แสดงเป็น Jacob ในละครเพลง Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.

ปัจจุบันเป็นเจ้าของและประธานบริษัท แบรนด์ซเคพ จำกัด (Brandscape Co., Ltd.) บริษัทที่ปรึกษาสร้างแบรนด์เขียน “Column “Brand Voice” ในหนังสือ Brand Age และจัดอบรมความรู้ด้านการสร้างแบรนด์ในโครงการ “Brandscape Forum”

Dolchai Boonyaratavej

A leading player in the branding scene of Thailand, Dolchai received his bachelor’s degree graduating with honors from the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University and his master’s degree in the field of Advertising Design, Visual and Performing Arts from Syracuse University, New York. With over 20 years of fame and expertise in the advertising industry, Dolchai has been the key figure in the transformation of brands such as Samsung, UBC, Happy D Prompt, Thanachat, Fitne’ and CAT Telecom
Having passion for music since childhood, he studied the piano under his mother, KhunYing Malaival Booyaratavej (National Artist). His many musical compositions include the musical of Peter Pan & The Gang, songs for the Miss Thailand Universe pageant, songs for H.M. the King and the royal family in the album “The Guiding Light”, by Chitrlada School, and a debut Jazz album “Day Off… Dolchai & friends” as a charitable fund raiser for the King’s Mother Organization.
Dolchai has graced various concerts such as the Bangkok Sympony Orchestra, “A Tribute to H.M. The King’s Compositions”, “Alive On Broadway”, Kamala Sukosol’s Big Band Jazz, and the Sirikit Medical Center Night on many occasions. He has been our nation’s representative singer in the Asian Festival of Dance in Manila, Philippines, and the Sawasdee Thai Night in Tokyo, Japan. He also performed as Jacob in the musical Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.
Presently, Dolchai is the owner and president of Brandscape Company Limited, a branding consultancy firm, while contributing his knowledge in columns such as “Brand Voice”, Brand Age, and Established “Brandscape Forum” as and academy of Branding arts.

คุณกมลา สุโกศล คือผู้นำในการขับร้องเพลงแจ๊สของประเทศไทย เมื่อใดก็ตามที่มีการขับร้องเพลงแจ๊สแบบดั้งเดิมหรือเล่นเพลงสวิง คุณกมลาจัดได้ว่าเป็นนักขับร้องเพลงที่ดีที่สุดของประเทศไทย ไม่มีนักร้องคนใดที่จะมีน้ำหนักเสียง จังหวะ และเป็นแบบฉบับที่จะมาเปรียบเทียบได้ในขณะนี้ คุณกมลามักจะถูกขนานนามจากเหล่าบรรดานักร้องไทยว่าเป็น “ราชินีแห่งเพลงแจ๊ส” เนื่องจากได้รับการชื่นชมอย่างกว้างขวาง และแบบฉบับในการขับร้องของเธอมักจะถูกเลียนแบบจากหลายๆ คน แม้ว่าคุณกมลาจะไม่ใช่นักร้องโดยอาชีพ ด้วยเหตุที่ว่าในประเทศไทย การเป็นนักแสดงไม่ใช่อาชีพที่ได้รับการนับถือยกย่องเท่าที่ควร แต่เธอได้ทำการบันทึกเสียงเพลงของเธอไว้มากกว่า 20 อัลบั้ม โดยชุดแรกได้เริ่มเปิดตัวเมื่อ 28 ปีที่แล้ว ในปี 1976 โดยผ่านการแสดงดนตรีคอนเสิร์ตการกุศล ซึ่งจัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีที่โรงแรมสยามซิตี

Khun Kamala Sukosol, The Singer

Kamala Sukosol is without doubt, Thailand’s leading Jazz vocalist. When it comes to traditional Jazz or Swing, Kamala is at her best, admired by many Thai singers who regard her as the “Queen of Jazz.”

Kamala’s fans will agree that she is equally an “entertainer” as she is a “singer”. Kamala has an uncanny ability to make audiences feel right at home with her funny remarks and non-scripted stories. Her concerts, created solely to “entertain” their audience. The songs paced, so that there is happiness after every sad song, rhythm after every ballad. For more flavor, dancers, props and other theatrics often accompany songs. Despite the fanfare, over the years, audiences have attended her performances because of Kamala and her music. They know that her concerts are always of high quality that her guest singers are also of high caliber. That the only place to hear the exciting sounds of Big Band Jazz is at Kamala’s concert at Siam City Hotel.
Kamala celebrated the highlight of her singing career when she was asked to record “Live & Learn” for one of Thailand’s best-known songwriters, Boyd Kosiyabong’s album “Million Ways to Love – Part 1” which went on to become a big hit in Thailand in 2003. She was ecstatic by how much airplay the song received on radio and television and even more thrilled when asked to perform the hit at Impact Arena as part of “Bakery” Concert. She had never performed in front of such a large audience before. Taking it in her stride sang her way into the hearts of 15,000 young fans. Later performances followed in a football field and even in a parking lot (biggest venue for a concert in Chiengmai)! Now lovingly referred to as “Khun Pa” (older auntie), Kamala is thrilled that she has been recruited by the younger set into her list of fans.

ประวัติความเป็นมาของดนตรีแจ๊ส

ดนตรีแจ๊สในยุคปี 1900-1920
ในยุคนี้ได้มีดนตรีสไตล์ใหม่กำเนิดขึ้นที่สหรัฐอเมริกา ดนตรีสไตล์ใหม่นั้นคือ Blues และได้กำเนิดขึ้นในชนบทของหมู่ชาวไร่ผิวดำ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของอเมริกา ดนตรีประเภทนี้เล่นง่ายๆ โดยใช้เครื่องดนตรีไม่มากนัก เช่น เปียโน เครื่องเป่า เบสและกีต้าร์เท่านั้น ดนตรี Blues ที่เป็นดนตรีสไตล์เริ่มแรกของ Jazz แตกต่างจากเพลง Ragtime หรือคลาสสิคเบาๆ ในสมัยนั้นตรงจังหวะและความรู้สึก ซึ่งได้รับอิทธิพลจากอาฟริกาซึ่งเป็นรากแท้ของคนผิวดำนั่นเอง Blues มักนิยมเล่นกันในสถานที่ที่ชาวไร่สังสรรค์กัน อาทิ ผับ หรือใช้บรรเลงประกอบงานพิธีต่างๆ

ยุคของแจ๊สปี 1920 “ The Jazz Age”
ดนตรีแจ๊สเริ่มเผยแพร่จากการได้มีการอัดจำหน่ายขึ้นในปี 1917 และจุดพัฒนาของดนตรีแจ๊สนี้อยู่ที่เมืองนิวออร์ลีนซ์ (New Orleans) ในมลรัฐหลุยเซียนา (Louisiana) ดนตรีแจ๊สในยุคนั้นส่วนใหญ่เล่นโดยคนผิวดำที่อ่านโน้ตเพลงไม่เป็น และบางครั้งก็เล่นกันสดๆ โดยไม่ได้เตรียมตัวเลย เครื่องดนตรีประกอบจะมีทั้งเครื่องเป่า กลอง แบนโจหรือกีต้าร์ โดยมากจะบรรเลงกันอย่างคล่องแคล่ว ฉับไวโดยไม่ต้องดูโน้ตเพลง จึงช่วยส่งเสริมให้นักดนตีได้รับความคิดสร้างสรรค์และใช้วิจารณญาณมาช่วยพลิกแพลงทำนอง ทำให้ในบางครั้ง “เสียงดนตรี” นั้นสำคัญยิ่งกว่า “ทำนอง” เสียอีก จึงทำให้ไม่สามารถได้ยินเสียงทำนองชัดเจน

ความเปลี่ยนแปลงในปี 1930 และการถือกำเนิดของ Big Band
ในทศวรรษนี้เศรษฐกิจเกิดวิกฤติและตกต่ำอย่างมาก ซึ่งมีผลกระทบต่อวงการเพลงแจ๊สเป็นอย่างมากเช่นกัน โปรโมเตอร์ของวงการแผ่นเสียงล้มละลายไปตามๆกัน ต่อมาเมื่อเศรษฐกิจฟื้นฟูขึ้น ตลาดคนฟังก็เปลี่ยนแปลงไปด้วยเช่นกัน นิวออร์ลีนซ์แจ๊ส และ Blues นั้นก็ไม่ได้รับความนิยมแล้ว จึงได้มีกำเนิดเพลงแจ๊สในสไตล์ Bog Band หรือที่เรียกกันว่า Swing ขึ้น เป็นเพลงที่เร็วกว่าเร้าใจยิ่งกว่า และสามารถตอบสนองตลาดวัยรุ่นที่นิยมไปเต้นรำกันด้วย

ความแตกต่างของ Big Band
นิวออร์ลีนซ์แจ็สนั้น ประกอบด้วยเครื่องเป่า 3 ประเภท มีทรัมเปต (Trumpet) ซึ่งจะยืนทำนองไว้ ส่วนคลาริเนต (Clarinet) ใช้เล่นเสียงประสานประกอบกับทำนอง และทรอมโบน (Trombone) จะเล่นเสียงต่ำเป็นฐานดนตรีที่เราเรียกกันว่า Bass ประกอบกับเปียโน กลอง เบส และกีต้าร์หรือแบนโจ โดยที่นักดนตรีจะไม่อ่านโน้ตเพลงและเล่นกันสดๆสร้างสรรค์ไปได้เรื่อยๆ โดยไม่มีโน้ตเป็นกรอบ จึงทำให้ทำนองไม่เด่นชัด และการ solo (การออกหน้าเล่นเดี่ยว) นั้นไม่จำเป็นนัก เพราะเน้นการเล่นกันเป็นหมู่คณะมากกว่า และอีกเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ไม่มีการ solo เห็นจะเป็นเพราะฝีมือในการเล่นเดี่ยวนั้นยังไม่ได้พัฒนาดีพอ

แต่หลังจากจุดกำเนิดของแจ๊สไม่นานนัก ได้มีศิลปินที่มีเทคนิคล้ำเลิศกับความคิดสร้างสรรค์และจินตนาการเหนือผู้อื่นอย่างมาก เขาผู้นั้น คือ หลุยส์ ดาเนียล อาร์มสตอง (Louis Daniel Armstrong) เขาทำให้การเล่นเป็นวงโดยไม่มีผู้ใดผู้หนึ่งเป็นจุดเด่นที่จูงใจผู้ชมได้นั้นหมดความนิยมไป ฉะนั้นดนตรีแจ๊สจึงต้องมีนักดนตรีเด่น (soloist) เป็นผู้ชักจูง แล้วหนึ่งในรุ่นต่อๆ มาก็มี เบนนี่ กู๊ดแมน (Benny Goodman) นักเป่าและผู้ควบคุมวง Big Band ที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดคนหนึ่งนั้นเอง

จากวงเล็กๆ ที่ประกอบด้วยเครื่องดนตรีเพียง 6 ชิ้นนั้น ได้กลายเป็นวงที่ประกอบด้วยนักดนตรี 12-14 คนขึ้นไป มีแตร 5 ชิ้น เครื่องเป่าอื่นๆ อีก 4 ชิ้น และ Rhythm Section คือ กลอง กีต้าร์ เปียโน และเบส นอกจากนี้วง Big Band จำเป็นต้องเล่นประกอบการเต้นรำด้วย วงดนตรีจึงต้องรักษาจังหวะให้คงที่และพร้อมเพรียงเสมอ ด้วยเหตุนี้นักดนตรีจึงต้องมีคุณภาพมากขึ้นด้วย และจำเป็นต้องอ่านโน้ตเพลงได้ ผู้ควบคุมวงนั้นเปรียบเสมือนหัวหน้าทีมที่นำนักดนตรีสู่ความพร้อมเพรียง และนำความไพเราะของทำนองให้ตรงตามที่ผู้เขียนได้เขียนทำนองไว้ สำหรับหัวหน้าวงที่มีชื่อเสีย เช่น Benny Goodman, Tommy และ Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman และ Glen Miller นั้นก็ล้วนแต่เป็นนักดนตรีที่มีฝีมือเยี่ยมและประพันธ์เพลงเองด้วย

“Duke Ellington” อัจฉริยะของดนตรี Big Band
ปรากฏการณ์ที่สำคัญมากที่สุดในการถือกำเนิดของ Big Band นั้น คือ Edward Kennedy “Duke Ellington” ผู้ได้นามว่าเป็น “อัจฉริยะ” เขาเป็นทั้งนักเปียโน นักประพันธ์เพลงและผู้ควบคุมวง และได้สร้างคุณค่าให้กับเพลง Big Band Jazz มากที่สุด

เครื่องดนตรีของ Duke Ellington คือ “วงทั้งวง” เขาจำเป็นต้องใช้วงดนตรี เพื่อสร้างสรรค์และค้นคว้าเพลงและไม่ใช้เฉพาะเวลาแสดงหรืออัดเสียงเท่านั้น แต่เขาใช้วงดนตรีทุกวัน เพราะวงดนตรีมีความหมายมากต่อการสร้างสรรค์เพลงของเขา เขาไม่ได้ประพันธ์เพลงให้วงอย่างเดียว ทว่าเขาจะเรียบเรียงทำนองให้เหมาะสมกับเครื่องดนตรีแต่ละชิ้นอีกด้วย เพราะฉะนั้นเขาจะเลือกชิ้นเครื่องดนตรีที่มีเสียงเหมาะกับท่วงทำนอง และยิ่งไปกว่านั้นเสียงประสานรับหรือลูกเล่นต่างๆ นั้น ได้เรียบเรียงขึ้นใหม่สำหรับวงนิวออร์ลีนซ์แจ๊ส แต่เขาได้เรียบเรียงขึ้นใหม่สำหรับวงออร์เคสตร้าแจ๊สโดยเฉพาะ ความเป็นอัจฉริยะของ Duke Ellington ได้นำแจ๊สจากการบรรเลงในผับหรือบาร์สู่ห้องบอลรูมที่หรูหราในเมืองใหญ่ๆ ที่มีผู้ชมผิวขาวด้วย

ความเป็นอัจฉริยะของเขา “Big Band Extravaganza” จึงได้อุทิศช่วงเพลงหนึ่งให้กับ Duke Ellington ผู้เดียว เพลงของ Duke Ellington เรียกได้ว่าเป็นเพลงปัญญาชนที่ได้สะท้อนสังคมและความคิดของดนตรีในยุค Big Band ได้อย่างดีเยี่ยม ผลงานเด่นหลายชิ้นของเขา อาทิ “Sophisticated Lady” นั้น ไม่สามารถเป็นที่นิยมในสมัยนั้นได้เลย เพราะมีความทันสมัยและก้าวหน้าเกินไป จะฟังได้ชัดจากท่วงทำนองซึ่งโดดไปโดดมา นักร้องที่มีความสามารถสูงเท่านั้นถึงจะร้องได้ เราหวังว่าท่านคงจะชื่นชมดนตรีของอัจฉริยะ Duke Ellington ผู้นี้เช่นเดียวกับเรา

STORY BEHIND BIG BAND

On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne, Big Band Extravaganza is conceived to salute His Majesty’s musical genius as composer, lyricist and musician, and to celebrate his passion for jazz. Many of His Majesty’s 47 compositions are written in the jazz tradition and his cherished recreation has always been the regular jam sessions with his own jazz band called The Or.Sor.Band.

The world’s greatest jazz musicians, among them, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, visited Thailand and met His Majesty’s band. Privy Councillor Tanin Kraivixien writes in his forward in the book, The Music of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, “ Jazz masters such as Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Lionel Hampton and Stan Getz, have from time to time been invited to join his impromptu jam-sessions. They all were indeed much impressed by His Majesty’s unusual ability to improvise in the tradition of jazz.”

Big Band Extravaganza is honoured to present three of His Majesty’s most memorable compositions: “Falling Rain” (Saifon), “ Love at Sundown” (Yamyen) and “Never Mind The H.M. Blues” (DuangJai Kub Kwam Rak).

THE MAGIC OF BIG BAND

Big Band Jazz is cherished for its sophisticated arrangements equaling classical music. Performed by an orchestra, each musician must be skilled enough to read the often complicated written music. Each line of music, harmony or melody, is written with the virtuosity of the instrument in mind; therefore, each and every orchestral part is as important as the other. The Big Band orchestra plays an equally-important role as the vocalist. During our performance, I encourage you to listen-out for those wonderful and exciting back-ups by the band.

Prachin, our musical director, and I both share a special love for Big Band music. It has also helped to bind and extend our collaboration for over 20 years. I adore the Big for its exciting rhythms and melodies; Prachin loves the team work required to perfect each piece.

While searching for music in America and England, we stumbled upon several original arrangements. You’ll hear the original arrangement of “I’ll Never Smile Again” and the authentic Glenn Miller arrangement in “Moonlight Serenade”.

REMINISCING THE FORTIES AND FIFTIES

I carefully selected each song in the programme to represent the 1940’s and 50’s Big Band Era. One can hardly imagine the 40s without The Andrews Sister’ instantly recognizable sound and the boogie-woogie beat that lifted the spirit of the GI’s during World War II; so, we bring an instant smile to your face in “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree”.

To reflect the eras’ unrivalled glamour, the show is staged without any pyrotechnics of today, but with authentic designs and customer that mirror the 40’s and 50’s Big Band stages. The performers and musicians are dressed in period costumes – slick, stylish and sophisticated, reminded of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

In addition, the rousing percussions of “Mack The Knife” will remind you of the popular South American Latin-style Big Bands of the famous Xavier Cugat and Perez Prado.

DUKE ELLINGTON INSPIRATION

An entire section of songs is devoted to Duke Ellington, the “genius”, whose definition of jazz was “freedom of expression”. I am deeply influenced by the polar differences of each of his compositions, the exceptionally melodies, the fascinating harmonies of his orchestral arrangements, and the emotions represented in each song. Listen and enter into the period: exuberance, sadness, extravagance, fantasy and even disillusionment.

In case you wonder what Ellington means in his famous composition, “Moon Indigo” (written in five minutes!), Ellington explains, “It has to do with a little boy and a little girl… Someone told the boy that she was his girl and he takes his responsibility seriously, although he’s scared stiff of her. He tips his hat each time he passes the step on which she’s sitting until her mother won’t let her sit on the step anymore. As she looks out the window, she has that ‘mood indigo’.

“Take the A Train” was written by Ellington’s collaborator Billy Strayhorn’s in 1941. Strayhorn’s inspirations were New York’s new subway train and the arranging style of the bandleader Fletcher Henderson. Subsequently, with characteristic generosity, Ellington used it as his band theme.

“It Don’t Mean A Thing”, written in 1932, was world famous and taken as the “Theme of an era”. With this number, Ellington anticipated the Swing Era by several years.
